Rhinestones on my Flip Flops
As I do from time to time, I interview some of my favorite authors
Jane Jenkins Herlong is one of those delightful writers whose ministry is to encourage using humor. She is a former Miss America contestant, best-selling author and a professional speaker and humorist.
Her award-winning singing and humor is featured on Sirius XM Radio and Pandora Internet Radio along with Jeff Foxworthy, Ray Romano and Jerry Seinfeld. She crisscrosses the country sharing her “downhome principles delivered with uptown humor.” Jane has also spoken in New Zealand and Germany and is fluent in four languages: English, Southern, Northern and Lowcountry Gullah (gul‐la).
Jane’s keen sense of humor evolved from being labeled dyslexic and constantly told, “You can’t do that!” Jane changed the word “no” to “next” and the rest is what dreams are made of. Audiences learn the healing power of humor when handling negative people and circumstances for more productive, positive living. Jane’s life stories and humor leave audiences with the same message she lives─ “prove people wrong and laugh while living your dreams.”
I was able to interview this inspiring woman and ask her some questions.
1) Jane, Why did you become interested in pageants?
Miss America represented everything I knew I could become. Excellent physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally. Pageants are life on steroids.
2) How did you make the transition from pageants to writing and speaking?
I moved to a town of 2,500 from living in Charleston and Greenville. I had to do something! Love brought me to the tiny town of Johnston.
3) What have you learned from being a writer?
That, praise the Lord, I have a message to share. It helps women walk with joy through life and I am honored to share it.
4) How has humor helped you in life?
Humor is a healthy tool for handling stress and things we cannot control. The Bible says, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine…”
5) Any flops you’d like to share that turned into a flip?
Yes, I experienced an intense family problem that became a lawsuit. My sister had a difficult time dealing with my mother and became so angry that I believe it affected her mental health. My sister died unexpectedly only 5 months after my mother died. I was clueless; many in my family vented their frustration towards me. Thank the Lord I sought the help of a Christian therapist. I turned my pain into other’s gain with my third book, Bury Me with My Pearls.
Here’s a blurb from her new book:
